The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved Viagra 50mg tablets in the US, but the approval has been delayed for several months due to concerns about safety, side effects and the impact on people’s health.
“This approval is a step in the right direction and will further support the safety, effectiveness and the proper use of Viagra in treating erectile dysfunction,” the agency said in a statement.

It said the drug is intended for “a short-term or temporary treatment of erectile dysfunction in men and women,” as it works by increasing blood flow to the penis.

“This approval is a major step in supporting the safety and effectiveness of Viagra and will further support the safety and efficacy of Viagra in treating erectile dysfunction,” the FDA said.
The FDA said it will consider additional safety considerations and provide more information about the drug in its final review.
A spokesman for Pfizer Inc., the world’s biggest drug company, declined to comment.

Both Viagra and sildenafil are widely used to treat erectile dysfunction. In fact, they contain the same active ingredient. Viagra is a brand name for the sildenafil produced and sold by the company Pfizer. Sildenafil is also sold as a generic drug, which is medically identical to Viagra.
